Get to Know Zach Tempel, Investment Analyst

Meet Zach Tempel, Market Analyst and new HLC Team Member!

Zach Tempel joined Holt Lunsford Commercial in 2023 and serves as an Investment Analyst. He is responsible for underwriting and evaluating potential investments, supporting the team in the execution of transactions, and using data analysis to monitor industry trends.

Prior to joining HLC, Zach gained internship experience working with commercial real estate firms Jackson-Shaw and Skywalker Property Partners.

Zach is originally from San Diego, California and came to Texas to study at Southern Methodist University. He’s a devoted Christian who prioritizes glorifying Jesus in his life. While in Dallas he loves to play golf, and while back home in California he enjoys surfing.

What brought you to HLC?
I applied to a ton of jobs and did a lot of networking, but what I liked most about HLC was the culture, especially on the Investments team. It’s a very caring culture and everyone is invested in your career development as well as wanting you to be successful in life. Even if you’re not at HLC in the future, the team genuinely cares about you, and they want you to succeed. At other firms, people may step on others to get ahead, but at HLC everyone works as a team to bring each other up.

How do you hope to grow at HLC?
I hope to become the best analyst I can be and provide the best support to the producers. I hope to learn as much as possible while creating a strong brand for myself. I want to be able to affect the people around me in a positive way. Most importantly, I hope to grow in my relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

What about your role at HLC most excites or interests you?
I love industrial development. I think it’s fascinating working with the cities to try and solve problems. I think development is a lot like being a firefighter. There are constant fires that pop up every day that need to be solved. It’s like a huge puzzle. I love looking into every detail of a deal and figuring it out. We’re providing a need for a changing society. Everyone orders boxes on Amazon rather than going into the store now, and we’re the ones who are allowing that to happen. DFW is growing a ton.

Which HLC value resonates the most with you and why?
We love people. As someone who tries their best to love everyone around them, I think being at a company that champions that value is extremely important to me.

What three words would you use to describe the HLC culture?
Loving, hardworking, and detail oriented.

If you could tell one person “thank you” for helping me become who you are today, who would it be and why?
My good friend Porter. He’s been my best friend ever since freshman year of college and I feel like he’s shaped me into the man I am today. If you had met me as a freshman in college, and compared that to me now, I was a completely different person. I think that’s all due to Porter bringing me to Jesus and showing me what a real relationship with Him looks like.

What are three interesting things about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume?
My favorite place to go in Texas is in Waco. There’s a surf pool there, which I enjoy going to. I have one brother and one sister who I love to death and they both live in San Diego. I really enjoy spending time with them and my family. Thirdly, I absolutely love Chipotle.

How would you define success?
Success is just finding meaning in whatever you’re doing, and if you’re enjoying it.

How do you like to spend your free time?
Golfing, surfing, going to church, and spending time with friends and family.

Where is the furthest you’ve traveled?
I’ve been to Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was an amazing, amazing place. It’s probably the coolest place I’ve ever been.  I’ve also been to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. I’ve never been to Asia, but I really want to go to Indonesia. They have really good surf there.

What character would you be in a book, movie or TV show?
Jason Bourne, I think that would be really fun to be. Hunted by not just the United States government, but all your enemies that you created while you were working for the United States government.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you want to have with you?
A Bible, set of golf clubs, and a fishing rod.

What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
The TV show Chuck. One of my friends recommended it to me.

What was the last gift you gave someone?
I gave my brother a golf polo from a nice golf course.

If you could steal credit for any great piece of art, song, film or book, which one would you claim?
I would want to have been Michelangelo creating the David. I’m not a huge art fan, but the David in Florence is the most amazing piece of art I’ve ever seen.

If you had to choose, what would your last meal be? No limits.
There’s this pizza place close to my house that closed. It’s called Gabbiano’s. I would love a pepperoni pizza from there.

Welcome to HLC, Zach; we are glad you are here!
