Get to Know Tom Land, Market Associate

Meet Tom Land, Market Associate and new HLC Team Member!

Tom Land joined Holt Lunsford Commercial in 2023 and serves as a Market Associate of the Dallas Office Group.  Tom is responsible for helping tenants align their business, financial, and operational objectives with their real estate needs.

Tom was born in Alice Springs, Australia and moved here when he was two years old. He grew up homeschooled in a big family and went on to attend Texas A&M University in College Station. He studied Nuclear Engineering until Junior year, but had the desire to receive his real estate license. He later transitioned to a business degree where he met his first mentor, Brian Smith, who taught him the basics of Commercial Real Estate and encouraged him to become a broker. Today, he is married, has a daughter and one on the way. He loves what he does, especially when given the opportunity to serve.

What brought you to HLC?
The culture. Knowing that the company was founded and built on biblical principles is a huge deal for me as a Christian. I believe that even at work, there is an opportunity to praise God, and being in an environment with likeminded leadership and men and women of character is why I came to HLC, and it’s why I’ve loved every minute working here since.

How do you hope to grow at HLC?
Being that HLC is a full-service firm, I’m really excited to better understand how the industry fits together—to have a more holistic understanding of Commercial Real Estate per se.

What about your role at HLC most excites or interests you?
I’m not a paper pusher. I enjoy getting out in the market and shaking hands with people or just picking up the phone and calling someone. I love the tenacity it takes to be in this line of work.

Which HLC value resonates the most with you and why?
We Serve. Bar none. I believe most personal development happens when you take up an opportunity to serve someone other than yourself. I also find that my happiness isn’t derived from self-satisfaction but from the fulfillment that comes when I put aside something that I want and really make a point to focus on someone else.

What three words would you use to describe the HLC culture?
Passionate, Values, and Cool.

If you could tell one person “thank you” for helping me become the person you are today, who would it be and why?
My current mentor, Brian Wilson, for cultivating my professional skillset as a tenant representative and providing me with a path to grow in the Commercial Real Estate industry.

Who or what inspires you?
Watching high-performance individuals achieve success.

What are three interesting things about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume?
I have a wife, a daughter, and one on the way! I eat only once every 24 hours and have for the past 22 months. I have nine brothers and sisters.

How do you define success?
Achieving the goals you set out for yourself. It’s not money. It’s not like fame. Success is subjective and defined by the person it’s not defined by some objective definition with a dollar sign in front of it.

How do you like to spend your free time?
With my wife and daughter.

If you were the CEO of a company name one thing you would make mandatory in the office and one thing you would ban.
I would mandate that employees participate in community events that help those in need at least once per quarter. I would ban disparaging talk and negative attitudes.

Where is the furthest you’ve traveled?
I was born in Alice Springs, Australia, so coming to America is the furthest.

What would you invent if you could?
A new and interesting novel.

Favorite quote?
“Although my memory’s fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior.” – John Newton

Favorite ice cream flavor?
Blue Bell Chocolate

What character would you be in a book, movie or TV show?
The old man in UP. When I’m working I can turn into quite a somber person.

What superpower would you like to have?
Speed

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you want to have with you?
An axe, a bible, and matches.

What’s your secret talent no one at work knows about?
I can juggle.

What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
The Office – it’s probably the funniest show of our generation

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
My wife mispronounced “Strategic” as “Satedric” (she’s a little dyslexic).

What was the last gift you gave someone?
I gave my daughter a tunnel pop-up play set for her birthday.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
I’d be an Australian Shepard. A hyperactive work-dog is pretty much my exact personality.

If you could steal credit for any great piece of art, song, film or book, which one would you claim?
Pietà, Michelangelo Buonarotti’s sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding the dead body of Jesus Christ.

Which animal would make the best type of president if the animal kingdom ever rose up and took over?
Orangutan

If you could redesign the food pyramid without any dire health consequences, how would it look?
Chocolate at the top, celery at the bottom.

If you had to choose, what would your last meal be? No limits.
My mother’s Cranberry Christmas Wreath with her Banana Pudding as dessert.

Welcome to HLC, Tom; we are glad you are here!
